Old Mrs. Moody and Catbaloo are planting a community pumpkin patch. As they work, Catbaloo tells a magical story about seeds. It’s the tale of Pipi Pumpkinseed—a brave big brother mouse who boldly sets out into the world to find food for his nine hungry brothers and sisters. Pipi returns home with ten pumpkin seeds and some very wise advice: “If you eat your seed, you’ll have a full tummy for one night, but if you plant it, you’ll have a full tummy every night–forever.” But the nine little mice are too hungry to care about planting or the future, and they quickly gobble down their seeds—but Pipi doesn’t. Pipi decides to plant his seed, and soon it grows enough pumpkins to feed every mouse in every house in the county! This charming story-within-a-story celebrates the miracle of seedtime and harvest. There’s a lot to learn from Pipi and his pumpkin seed—a little bit about gardening and a lot about planting good things for the future.
